At Pentecost
(Version A)

Text:

At Pentecost, Christ's friends—awaiting it—
heard roaring wind, while tongues like fire split,
till kindling flames upon all heads alit.
Alleluia!

For Christ's apostles—Galileans each—
that roar of Spirit then outpoured as speech.
So Christ as Lord in ev'ry tongue was preached!
Alleluia!

Yet fresh'ning wind, O Spirit, enter in.
(or: Now, Fresh'ning Wind, You bring Love's oxygen.)
Ignite and brighten lives for Christ again.
Be deepest breath to sing our Lord's Amen!
Alleluia!

This piece is based on the events of Pentecost as recorded in Acts 2,
as the Holy Spirit came to the disciples gathered in Jersusalem, and
the Church began its life. (For our version emphasizing Christ's wider church, click here.)

Musical Details:

We offer this as a congregational hymn. The tune is adapted from ENGELBERG by Charles V. Stanford (1852-1924), so you may already have accompaniment resources which could work. However, you may want to download our specific arrangements (with one rhythmic change and different harmonizations). We have versions for piano and for organ.

To supply the words to your congregation, download the appropriate "Text Only" or "Hymnsheet" file for copying or projecting.
