At Pentecost
("Wider Church" version)

Text:

At Pentecost, Christ's friends—awaiting it—
heard roaring wind, while tongues like fire split.
Upon each head, a kindling flame alit!
Alleluia!

For Christ's apostles—Galileans each—
that roar of Spirit then outpoured as speech.
In ev'ry tongue, our Christ as Lord was preached!
Alleluia!

You, Spirit, yet remind us of Christ's words,
still knit together from around the earth
one Body—by your breath, a Living Church!
Alleluia!

This hymn is based on the events of Pentecost as recorded in Acts 2,
as the Holy Spirit came to the disciples gathered in Jersusalem, and
the Church began its life. We have two versions of this hymn, with this one emphasizing the worldwide nature of Christ's church. (For our version that focuses more on congregations or individuals, click here.)

Musical Details:

The tune for this is ENGELBERG by Charles V. Stanford (1852-1924), so you can use accompaniments which you may already have. (Please note that the rhythm changes we made in our accompaniments for Version A do not fit this set of words as well as the original ENGELBERG.)

Our "Text Only" or "Hymnsheet" files may be downloaded and copied to provide the hymn to your congregation.
